Ergonomics

Considering that over 100 different injuries can result from repetitive motions on the job and that hundreds of thousands of workers suffer injuries due to repetitive motion or overexertion on the job each year, employees and employers would greatly benefit from Ergonomics. While ergonomics related injuries are seldom fatal they can be debilitating- even career ending- for employees and very costly for employers. Ergonomics will help you identify and assess ergonomic hazards and institute an OSHA required ergonomic protection program to either prevent them or alleviate their effects.


Employees, ask yourselves...

• Do you have episodes of numbness or tingling sensations in your hands; pain or swelling or the tendency to drop things?
• Do you find yourself taking anti-inflammatory drugs and/or wearing braces much of the time?
• Do you know what safe lifting practices are and do you use them on the job?
• If you work with a computer do you know how far a monitor should be from your eyes? How high your chair should be? What the ideal elbow angle is?

Employers, ask yourselves...

• Do the acronyms CTD, CTS, RMI or RSI have any meaning for you (hint- they should! )?
• Do you know the six major risk factors for musculoskeletal disorders?
• Have your supervisors and/or managers had ergonomics training? Can they recognize hazardous work practices and early symptoms of musculoskeletal disorders?
• Do you have an OSHA required ergonomic protection program in place?
