Electrical Safety

Electricity is arguably civilization's most useful force and certainly it's most deadly. Unlike most other workplace hazards electricity cannot be seen. Doubtless that is a factor in the statistic that, on the average, one worker is electrocuted on the job every day of the year. Even if you receive a non-fatal shock you can still suffer severe burns and/or internal organ damage. Electrical Safety has the info you need to understand electricity's effect on the body and to enact the safety measures that are required to keep you from becoming part of an electrical circuit.


Employees, ask yourselves...

• Do you know what the third prong on an plug is there for?
• Do you know all of the ways you can become part of an electrical circuit (hint- there are more than you think!)?
• Do you know the factors that can increase the severity of any electrical shock?
• If you see a co-worker receiving an electrical shock, do you know what to do?

Employers, ask yourselves...

• Do you know the effects of various amounts of electrical current on the body? Do you know how much current is usually fatal?
• Would you be able to recognize the warning signs of electrical hazards in your workplace?
• If you understand the electrical hazards in your workplace, do you know how to eliminate or control them?
• Do you know what a GFCI is? When/where they should be used?
• Do you emphasize safe work practices in general, which are all the more critical when working with electricity?
